The cost of job hunting
The first hurdle is to get through an application to secure an interview for a graduate job but then the chances are you'll have to cover your travel expenses to get there. It's good to hear that Barclays is offering their interviewees two free nights' accommodation in London, Birmingham and Manchester during November to help with the high cost of attending interviews. The bank's own research shows that on average UK graduates will spend £500 by the time they start work in their first role straight out of university. If you attend more than one interview the costs start to soar. Some employers cover travel expenses but others do not make any contribution. It's always worth asking if expenses are covered as you will need to keep receipts and it goes without saying that travel needs to be in economy or standard class. Employers risk losing the brightest candidates if they can't afford to travel around the country.
