UCAS applications have now closed and hopefully that’s not a surprise. Research by Unifrog, an online university and careers platform, suggests that Leeds University was the most popular choice followed by Exeter, Edinburgh, Bristol and Durham. The study of 100,000 sixth formers showed that three per cent more boys would apply to a Russell Group university (46%) compared to 43 per cent for girls. Almost 70 per cent of private school pupils would apply for the old red bricks compared to just 40 per cent of state pupils.

Unifrog’s study also indicated that girls are taking more science, technology and maths A Levels but not choosing these subjects at university with psychology, law, medicine, history, geography, English and architecture among the top choices. The most popular subjects for boys include economics, law, medicine, computer science, maths, accounting and finance and mechanical engineering.
